Evaluation photo essay

Evaluation photo essay

I stated in my proposal that I’m going to base my essay on my nephew, and I did that. He loves a camera. I’m happy with what I created and came up with as my final piece. Altogether I took a total of 43 pictures because he kept moving or the shots became blurred.

I used a lot of close up shots focusing on his facial expression, the reason I focused on his facial expression because he can pull humorous faces but at the same time look cute. I managed to capture some low angle and high angle shots of my nephew-including one of him crying, which was one of my favourites.

For a long while I was contemplating whether to use black and white photo’s or colour, so I decided to include a bit of both.

I had a slight problem with the soundtrack, for the first 10 seconds it doesn’t play. I need to fix this problem.

I tried to make my photo essay a bit humorous at the end by including a sound effect of a crying baby. I did this because it matched with the image of my nephew crying. The reason I chose to add the sound effect because I didn’t want it to be just a boring slide show of pictures. The music I chose was called nursery rhyme music from you tube, it’s slow, calm and sounds playful to match with young children.

The editing was fairly simple this time round, I’m getting used to final cut pro each week. I used the fade out transition which blends in well. I chose this transition because I’ve used it before numerous times and after inputting it, I thought it look suitable.

I’m extremely happy with what I came up with but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for improvement. I’m excited at the prospect at the fact that I can put my video to good use and show my nephew when he’s older.

I received feedback about my essay, the majority of the group liked the images but couldn’t understand why there was no music for the first 10 seconds. I have plans to edit my video and sort that problem out.

I hope you enjoy the video

Proposal for photo essay

Proposal

My idea is to take pictures of my nephew who is 11 months old. The majority of my projects I do I will be trying to base them around him. Why? Because when this course is finished I can put use to the films about him and show him them when he’s older.

My main goal is to try and see him grow. I’ll be including pictures from when he was just born and now.

My nephew is very lively and active and can pull some of the most amusing facial expressions. With great timing I hope to capture them.

I hope to use a different variety of shots such as long, medium, close, low angle, high angle and extreme close up shots. Categorically I know taking photos of a baby will be difficult as they can’t keep still! But I see it as fun exciting challenge as to what I’ll come up with.

I had to think about my target audience carefully, but I feel my target audience should be children and families. Maybe if other families knew my idea and had a read of this proposal then they’d realise what the purpose of this montage of my nephew actually is, and maybe decide to do this themselves.

I will include he dissolve transition for effect because i feel that's it's appropriate. I’m still contemplating on whether my photos will be black and white or colour, maybe a mixture of both.

Background music – I am going to go for a calm, relaxing, nursery rhymed theme tune because it fits in with babies.

What i like about you filming.

Today i went filming for my what i like about you footage. My plan was to film my nephew who is 9 months. I managed to film for around half an hour, but the majority of the time he kept trying to grab the camera. I came up with something in the end, it's short but i have something in the end.

Today i did shot lists. Shot lists are similar to story boards but instead we plan out our shots in a order. For a practice shot list we had to do them on films such as reservoir cats (dogs) and kill jill aka kill bill. I have posted an example of a shot list i did earlier.

Haiku poem

Haiku poem video

I went to go and film my haiku poem. It took me around 20 minutes and it was pretty easy. I had no problem filming.

Haiku poem task

Today me and my parter went to film but our video was based on a Haiku poem. This is where you get a poem and film but follow the poem. It's hard to explain. I did 3 though and i will upload when finished editing.

Haiku poem idea

For my haiku poem idea i think i'm going to make mine up myself. I want to base it around God, heaven and hell.

Talent evaluation

Evaluation Talent

So I created my talent video. I bet you would expect this video to be outstanding or something that shows signs of improvement compared to my past other videos.

Honestly, this video is by far the worst I’ve created as it was rushed. I had planned and arranged to meet a friend so I could film but he bottled talking in front of the camera.

I had to find a replacement that I could film. By the time I had a replacement it started to get dark so the light quality looks poor.

I was lucky to have someone to film and create what I did. Although I wasn’t happy with the final product, I’m happy with the shots I managed to come up with.

If I were to do this again I would make it longer and try and make my friend explain in depth about why he wanted to play basketball and what he wants from basketball in the future. I would also find someone reliable that won’t back out. I’m camera shy, so I won’t be too harsh on my friend. I would also find the right time of day to film so I can get the right light.

Kayne West - Amazing is a basketball song used in the NBA so I’m happy with that choice.

Production log

Production log

18th October.
Today we had to edit our video's of our talent we chose to film. I editited mine in the second half of the lesson. The first half I and some other went out with Andy and did a task called 50 people 1 question. Instead we made it 25 people due to the lack of time. We had to film them and ask them 'what black historical person past or present do you admire the most'? It was a question based on black history month.

In the second half of the lesson i edited my video using final cut pro. At 3.30pm we all had to show the class what video's we have come up with this term.

Filming da for my talent

Today i went to go film, and it was awful. It took me over 3 hours to film. More will follow when i evaluate.

Film 3 - Talent idea

When i had a read of the brief and it said i had to film a talent then instantly i new who i was going to film. My good friend Jordan who plays basketball for Derby and the best team in Derby. I'm just going to film him doing a few trick shots and dribbling.

Evaluation 5x5

Evaluation 5x5

I wrote my proposal which gave an idea of what I wanted to create. I planned a target audience and purpose for my 5x5 film. However, the footage I managed to film for a short video I believe is acceptable and relates to my proposal, but I don’t think my film is informative. I don’t think this informative because there’s nothing there, it doesn’t tell a story or anything. Maybe if I did this film as a documentary then it would be more attractive but then again I would have to think about whether the children would really focus on a documentary about a park.

I’m happy with the clips because I feel I was creative when filming, and it shows signs of improvement from my local tour video. I also followed my proposal.

The sound effects do not at all relate to my proposal. The sound effects are the wrong ones for my video and target audience I had planned this video at. I received feedback from members of the class and they questioned whether I made this for a horror film set. I also received a comment on you tube saying. “
spooooooooooooooooky! lol

Gareth12359 12 hours ago.” This video wasn’t to ‘spook’ anybody.

What I also noticed was grey skies! It looked as if it was going to rain!

If I were to do this again then I know massive adjustments need to be made. I need to plan properly and in depth especially if I’m planning on using sound effects. I would use a child like soundtrack. I need to plan a better time of day. I wanted to inform children about a park, so I decided to film grey skies and use horror film sound effects. Planning is important.

Production log filming day

Saturday October 1st.

I woke up to go film. I left my house at around 10.30am to film my 5x5 at the local park. The reason why i was at my local park was because i want to inform children and parents of the park which is hardly used. Even though i filmed 5 shots, i was there for around 50 mintutes as i had to get the right shots. When i was gathering my shots the time scale went over 5 seconds but i cut them to the right size when editing. I believe i've met my requirements and expectations. So far filming has been great for me and I'm enjoying it. I hope to keep this positive mentality.

Proposal film 5x5

My initial idea is to inform people about a popular site in my area or in Derby. By popular site I mean Westfield Derby which is Derby towns shopping centre or Pride park which is Derby County football stadium. (Example)

The reason I want to inform people because in Derby you don’t really have a tutorial of the city, and my tutorial will be of for example, Westfield Derby as it’s a key feature to the city. I want to let them know what is around and pick out certain areas that they don’t know about or have never heard of by making this short film.
Idea.
My idea is to inform children about a local park. It’s in my area and is barely used. It’s rather small but can be enjoyable and if I film the right footage I’m sure I’ll be able to get the right message across and generate a soothing, welcoming atmosphere for the park. That is my main goal.

I plan to entertain my audience by using a varies of angle shots. I know I must use five so I will state the five that I possibly may use.

Extreme long shot - This shot normally shows exterior scenes such as buildings or sites. It won’t give a much detail but it is a great shot to start my film with or even end.

Close up - This shot won’t be giving as away much of the background as it’s a close-up but it will be used to focus on objects in the park such as a swing or a climbing frame. I have used this shot before and it intends to give a more blurred effect in the background.

Long shot - This shot is more life size and as how you would see it. If I were to film people then you would capture their whole body. For example I record myself. My head would have to be at the top of the frame and my leg at the bottom. The background would also show a lot of detail.

Low angle shot - I have used this before and it’ my favourite shot. The low angle shot increases height which may confuse the viewer as it may seem as an object is bigger than it should be. Since it’s a low angle shot it will tend to be just the sky in the background.

Camera movement - I have used this camera angle before. This camera angle tells a story. Moving the camera has the effect of making the action seem slower than it actually is. It also adds excitement.

My target audience will be children. Both boy and girls. The end…No you’re wrong. Yes what I’m filming is going to be a park for children but I must specify the age category. I would say ages 3-8 because it’s a small park and the equipment there has to have either a parent pushing you or a parent holding onto you. My video is to attract children but I must also catch the parents eye. I have to make the video so the parents want to bring their children to this park. What my job is to not reveal to much about the park and it’s main features.

How my film will run through. I have also drawn a storyboard so I’m precise about what I’m talking about. I will start my film with either a long shot of the park which will show the full view of the background and the park will have very little detail. Or film the sign and the name of the park. The sign states the name of the park and rules by Derby council. This will be a close up shot. The start of my film will start will a transition as well.

I will then film an high angle shot on one of the parks objects. After that a low angle shot to focus on for example the swings. I will possibly be doing a moving shot which will focus on the climbing frame and the slide. I will end my film using a transition and focusing on another one of the parks objects. My clips will all be 5 seconds long. I’m still debating on what sound to use.

I haven't yet thought about music or sound effects but something relaxing and enjoyable should be suitable.

Evaluation local tour

Evaluation Local Tour

So I finally created my first video, and to be honest I couldn’t be anymore happier with it. I know it wasn’t the best but it’s my first video and hopefully with practise they’ll improve.

The point of my video is to show a local tour of my area which is Derby.

When I started filming I had to identify which possible areas I was going to film as I didn’t want the local idiots intervening.

It took me two filming sessions to film my local tour. Luckily I had not edited my first set of clips as I came with new ideas the following day.

I used a lot of long shots when filming mainly because I wanted to show the view. My favourite clip on this local tour is from 1:04 - 1:08. The reason for that is I liked the angle, image and then the transition which faded out.

If I were to do this again I would make my local tour more appealing. I would have a target audience. For feedback I would also gather opinions of the public to help me with further progression.
